Medium garnet black color. Aromas of mocha, old leather, dark berry pie crust, and Brussels sprouts with a medium-to-full body and a medium-to-long sour cherry, blood orange, mocha and leather, vanilla, fig, dates, and tomato leaf, and walnut finish. An appetizing New Jersey red blend with bright fruit, crunchy tannins, and a nice sense of place.

For the wine consumer jaded by the chocolate and vanilla worlds of Cabernet and Chardonnay, a little diversity in the nightly wine selection can offer a welcome respite. Though hardly the "next new thing," a number of regional specialties around the country are waiting to surprise the unsuspecting wine tourist and provide a welcome change of pace.

A number of these wines are made in states such as Wisconsin or Missouri, from grapes such as Marechal Foch, Frontenac and Marquette; they are idiosyncratic with tangy flavors and moderate tannins; they are meant for early consumption.
