Ruby black color. Aromas of blackberry, marjoram, rye crisps, and cocoa nibs with a round, crisp, fruity sweet medium-to-full body and a warming, interesting, medium-length licorice and hints of violet petals finish with moderate oak flavor. A bold, everyday Columbia Valley red that satisfies.

For the wine consumer jaded by the chocolate and vanilla worlds of Cabernet and Chardonnay, a little diversity in the nightly wine selection can offer a welcome respite. Though hardly the "next new thing," a number of regional specialties around the country are waiting to surprise the unsuspecting wine tourist and provide a welcome change of pace.

A number of these wines are made in states such as Wisconsin or Missouri, from grapes such as Marechal Foch, Frontenac and Marquette; they are idiosyncratic with tangy flavors and moderate tannins; they are meant for early consumption.
