A Cask-Finished Straight Rye Whiskey will undergo additional maturation in one or more barrels, the previous contents of which contribute to the aromas and flavors of the final product. Examples include but are not limited to used Rum, Cognac, Port, Sherry, Madeira, Stout, and maple barrels.
In order for a product to be categorized as a Straight Rye Whiskey, the following must be true:
Mash bill must be made up of a minimum of 51% rye.
Aged a minimum of two years.
May not contain any flavors or colors.
All of the liquid in the bottle must be distilled in the same state.
