About Rauchbier

About Rauchbier
Rauchbiers are amber to dark brown in color and range in alcohol from 5-6%. These beers are characterized by assertive smoky aromas and flavors resulting from a portion of the malted barley kilned by Beechwood-fueled fires. The intensity of smoked flavors and aromas greatly vary and are generally balanced by a sweet malty framework. Originating in Bamberg, these beers can be described as smoked märzen style lagers. Rauchbiers are still brewed in the traditional manner by many breweries centered around Bamberg, though many brewers in other parts of the world have begun to make similarly styled beers. Noteworthy examples of this style include: Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen, Spezial Rauchbier Märzen, Fort Collins Out of Ashes Rauchbier and Samuel Adams Bonfire Rauchbier.
