Serve in a White Wine Glass
Besides Albariño, there are other notable white wines from Portugal. The most famous is Vine Verde ("green wine") made from several local white varieties, such as Arinto and Trajadurra in the northern province of Minho. These are light, refreshing whites with aromas of citrus, melon and nectarine. They are appealing, light white wines to be enjoyed fresh as a summer sipper or with light seafood or salads.
There are also white wines from the Douro region that are similarly styled light whites, as well as a few from coastal areas such as Bairrada and the Beira Atlantico. Some of the most celebrated whites come from the Beiras region in western Portugal. Here a few producers make a barrique-aged white from the Cerceal variety. These wines are richer and more complex than they typical Portuguese white and point to a new era in the country's viticulture.
