American-style wheat ales are clear or hazy, golden-colored beers that range in alcohol from 4.5-5.5%. These beers are fermented with a non-European yeast strain, and although they may look similar to German weizens, they do not taste like them. Estery and phenolic German weizen yeast aromas and flavors typically will not be found in these beers. Beers in this category feature American hop varieties, ranging from low-to-high hop bitterness. Noteworthy examples of this style include: Goose Island 312 Urban Wheat, Stevens Point Nude Beach Summer Wheat Ale, Bell’s Oberon and Three Floyds Gumballhead.
